As a composer, my best work often comes when I surprise myself. An idea takes a different direction and I can see a whole new set of possibilities from the paths I usually take. Improvising for me is spontaneous composition, and working with others helps keep the “idea stream” fresh and filled with new potential.

Alone however, improvising can be worrisome, what happens if one runs out of ideas? For this reason I called my first solo improvisation sessions solo fright, [which was also a pun on jazz guitarist Charlie Christian’s recording solo flight]. So one day I went to Soren Truhlar’s studio to record a set of improvisations. It was a good day and things went well. He had a book in his room and would open it to a random page and call out a title for each new piece as we went along.

All the titles but one were called from that book. Pavane has a typical a-b-a-c-a structure, and the a theme is a short set of chords that I came up with that day. A pavan [or pavin in older English] was a stately dance that came before the more sprightly galliard.
