about

When writing music, one starts with an inspired idea, but the finish is about taking away everything non-essential. It reminds me of of a quote attributed to Iroquois carvers - you wait until you see the face that is already there and just dig everything else away. I was hoping that these pieces might seem as if they have always been here in our rich world of music. That when you hear one you might say, “Ah yes, I remember that piece."

The steel string guitar has a complex resonance and an intriguing decay that is heard throughout this record. Droning strings provide a pad for melodic overlays and the intimate sound production underscores the folksy character of the music. All of the pieces on this recording are in two tunings [EBEEBE and DADGAD] and are written in simple folk forms with lots of internal repetition.
